Signal
Most products still treat AI as a feature bolted onto an existing flow, a chat box dropped into a corner of a screen that was designed for something else. That approach worked when AI was a novelty. It stops working once users expect the product to actually understand what they're trying to do.
Machine experience design starts by asking what signal the system needs, not what button the user should press. The interface becomes a way of feeding intent to a model, not just a way of displaying its output.

Context
An AI feature without context is just a guess with better grammar. It can sound confident and still be useless, because it was never given the information that would have made the answer correct for this specific person, in this specific moment.
The products getting this right treat context as part of the interface, not an input field. What the system already knows, what it just observed, and what the user didn't have to repeat all become design decisions, not engineering afterthoughts.

Trust
Every AI native interaction is asking for something a plain interface never had to ask for: belief that the system understood the request correctly before it acted on it. Skip that and users start double checking everything, which defeats the entire point of automating it.
Trust gets built through small, visible moments. A confirmation before an irreversible action. A clear reason for a recommendation. The ability to correct the system without starting over. None of it is glamorous, and all of it is the actual job.

Handoff
The best machine experiences know exactly when to step back and hand control to the human, and exactly when to step in without being asked. Getting that boundary wrong in either direction breaks the relationship, either through constant interruption or silent overreach.
Designing that handoff well is quickly becoming the real differentiator in AI native products. Anyone can add a model. Very few teams can design the moment where the model knows to stop.
